Hello solvers, and thanks for giving this one a try. Lots of short words for it being a bigger crossword, and I should probably have tried to put in a phrase spanning several lights for variation, but I had something else in mind... Hit the like button 👍 if you made it this far, and drop us a comment if indeed the mood so takes you. I'll get on with the washing-up:
ACROSS. 1A. Insert "trash" = SCRAP into "Scottish island" = SKYE. "First recorded" = R. 7A. anag. CRUEL. 8A. Insertion of "one" = I in "church body" = NAVE. 9A. "Stunt", as in shorten "aircraft" = KITE. 11A. Half of "resort in south of France" = BIARRITZ. 13A. "Note" = FA around "80s film" = ET. 14A. First letter of "industry" in "commercial" = AD + "Europe" = EU. 15A. "Go fast" = RUN + first letter of "grab". 17A. Alternate letters in "NeAtDrAm". 19A. "British" = B + "artist" = RA. 21A. Anag. WORN contains "English" = E. 22A. "One" = I contained in "head-covering" = HAT, first letter of "in". 23A. anag. MRJAWBONES.
DOWN. 1D. "Old-fashioned" = SQUARE, "tuber" = ROOT. 2D. Hidden reversed in souTHCAYman. 3D. Anag. ROCK. 4D. Homophone of "are not" = AREN'T. 5D. "Flag" = TILE, last letter of "rogue" 6D. Insertion of "chopper" = AX into "Bond" = RELATION. 10D. "One" = I, anag. RICE. 12D. Reversal of "Arizona" = AZ, first letter of "gala". 13D. Change middle letter of "enthusiast" = FAN. 16D. "New" = N, "IN" plaintext, German "yes" = JA. 18D. "Before noon" = AM, "one" = I, "energy" = GO. 19D. "That is" = IE, preceded by central letters of "hyBRid". 20D. "Group from Norway" = A-HA, first letter of "blubber".
Oh, a lot of repetition of "one = I", isn't there? I only noticed that now. Apologies for the sameness.

A fine challenge! I live in the States, so it's an extra (fun) challenge to see if I can pick up on various non-US dialect or geography references. Cheers!

Congrats, nicely done. I try to be fair to US solvers, but my culture's invariably going to inform a lot of the decisions I make when setting.
