Crosswords often use the ISO code or car numberplate code for countries in clues. This is often, but not always, the same. Switzerland, for example, is CH in both, but Germany is DE in the ISO code and D on numberplates, giving compilers more options. Examples of clues: "Poland joins Austria and South Africa in the Spanish square (5)" = PL + A + ZA = PLAZA, "Spain follows Russia and regrets (4)" = RU +ES = RUES It's not supposed to be a general knowledge crossword, so if you need to look them up, here is a list: https://www.worlddata.info/countrycodes.php If you like my crosswords, then you'll LOVE the Cryptic Mystic's YouTube channel, which is a brilliant resource for cryptic newbies and has been kind enough to feature a few of my puzzles https://www.youtube.com/@The_Cryptic_Mystic
