                                            this was my first meta puzzle attempt and my solutions (guessed) were completely off base! is it ok to ask for explanation help here? (please ignore if tacky request!)

                                              No problem. There are 4 symmetrically placed hairstyles in the across entries split by a black square in the grid. Those same black squares split an 8-letter adjective going down. You don't need the full words, just 8 letters. Do you see it?
