Darn and just when I think I'm good at cryptics I get humbled every time... ah well nice puzzle thanks, ill learn some day to leave you geniuses well enough alone
I just love puzzling and don't at all consider it a competition of intellect - if they're not fun to do then I feel I've failed as a setter! I found the Guardian blogs on various devices really useful when I was teaching myself how to solve cryptics, as well as the blog Crossword Unclued :)
Not a device I'd employ in big tough ones sure, but feel like in a 5x5 they're not totally unfair - lots of crossing opps and only so many 5 letter words that could be indicated. Or do you think even this was frustrating rather than fun?
If that question's posed to me: No; not frustrating at all, but in fact hella fun. I'm not a stickler for the rules of cryptics. The clue for 2D was cryptic; it had two parts; the mechanism(s) for the two parts were familiar. And I solved it, so not frustrating to me at all. And believe me, I can get frustrated w/cryptics.
If that question's passed to me (): I tend to prefer variety cryptics, where adherence to known standards is more critical to ensure the solving experience is fair and clear. So generally I prefer to work within the constraints of providing/hiding anagram fodder, but respect folks who know that they're doing and bend the rules in service of a fun surface/puzzle.
