TRY is another very tricksy word in cryptic puzzles. It is, of course, both noun and verb, and can clue, amongst other things, ATTEMPT, GO, HEAR (as in TRY a court case), a way of scoring points in rugby, TEST, SAMPLE, WEAR ONE'S PATIENCE (as in, "I find Melanie's terrible attempts at humour very trying"). If you like my crosswords, then you'll LOVE the Cryptic Mystic's YouTube channel, which is a brilliant resource for cryptic newbies and has been kind enough to feature a few of my puzzles https://www.youtube.com/@The_Cryptic_Mystic

"Carnal" = FLESHY "Fellow" = F (it's a crossword convention, albeit one I don't particularly like), "the French" = LES (it means "the" plural in French), "retiring types" = SHY. Hope that helps x
