Terrific puzzle, Jay! WSJCC or MGWCC worthy, if you ask me. I also like the 13 x 13 size.

Terrific puzzle. I also like the grid size.

I guess I'll never understand metas... unless someone would kindly explain how they arrived at the answer?
                  • OddBear 4s · 2021-12-08T00:09:02.705Z
I assume only people who have solved the meta can read these...

55-Across hints at 6 answers that can be ended with "oon" (title hints at this). Synonyms of these are found in the grid. If you take the first letters of these synonyms in the order they appear in the grid, you get a word that you can add "oon" to (which is a special trip).

Thanks for the excellent explanation, and I have no idea how you think your way past the oon step. Looking for synonyms and then putting together the first letters never dawned on me! My "puzzle brain" must be severely underdeveloped!
                      • OddBear 4s · 2021-12-09T00:15:38.302Z
I've seen 50+ of Matt Gaffneys metas so I've picked up on some common patterns like those. I had no idea what to look for at first either!
                      • Mike D 9:58 · 2021-12-09T15:00:19.841Z
You're correct that you can only read these after solving (or giving up and revealing if the constructor has allowed that)!
Also FYI, you can surround a spoiler with || on either side to hide it until it's clicked, like this.

FUN GRID, and did not see the mechanism until the clues came to muggles. A very fine meta challenge! Surprised at one of the keys being a DOWN entry (had to backsolve to find that one because i just wasn’t looking at the down answers having found five across answers). I always like it when the mechanism has to be applied to the meta word too (here, adding the common ending to the 6 letters found, to make the complete answer). Bravo!

I missed the synonym aspect, but solved it by finding a special trip that ended in OON. Loved the clues for KFC, NAPA, and POLES.
