This puzzle, originally published by Games Magazine in March 2001, has been tweaked slightly to make it a meta puzzle. R.I.P. Nancy Salomon, who mentored scores of new constructors back in the day.
Nudges:
Metanisms didn't exist in 2001. But the first words of the three themers have a connection

Heh. I have no idea what the ACTUAL metanism is, but politics + HANGING + African country made me immediately think HANGING CHAD... and sure enough... here we are! Looking forward to learning what I was supposed to figure out! Enjoyed the puzzle.
LOL Loved it! Nice alternative cluing to the answer - it took me quite a while to "get" it. And thank you for introducing me to the late great Ms. Salomon
nice puzzle! needed nudge #1... i only heard of the hanging one... the other two i had to google... very apropos in regards to the release date of the original puzzle given the 2000 election... this was a lovely tribute to Nancy thank you for sharing! :)
As a politics junkie, I'm kicking myself that I needed the first two nudges. Very nicely adapted. Especially liked the 14A/15A/26A/37A/38D/64D clues. Fun stuff, thanks!

I well remember the various types of chads from 2000! Imagine, at the time we thought that was as screwed up as an election could get! Great puzzle, and Nancy Salomom sounds like she was an exceptional constructor and human being.
Well it doesn't now but I could swear it did before because I clicked on it and saw that it was the Kangaroo one that I had initially had some problems with. I did not know how that related because I had already solved the "CHAD" one and did not see the commonality between the two (which now appears to be a non-question because it either didn't, or now doesn't. link)
Dude, I knew you thought highly of Ms Salomon (I too have passed her essays on to several new constructors, after you did the same for me), but I never knew you were published with her and/or that she mentored you. Maybe I should treat you with more respect? But seriously, very cool!
