  Fun puzzle! I got all the down answers, then looked through the across ones, and 8A is a mystery to me, can anyone fill me in? Searched it on Google and nothing came up. (I'm aging, as well :-) )

    Maybe it's more regional slang - at least it's a common term in Massachusetts - but it's just a nickname for a state trooper.
