Of course, I'm a "Pirates of the Caribbean" fan, amused by the antics of Jack Sparrow in all his exploits and swashbuckling adventures. But in sobering truth, the real pirates of history were murderous thieves who plundered and terrorized sailors across the Seven Seas.
One noteworthy English pirate, Joseph Bannister, operated in the Caribbean as captain of the Golden Fleece. On one occasion, he battled British warships for two full days, forcing them to retreat. But when the Royal Navy returned, rearmed and ready to bring Bannister down, they found only the burning remains of his sinking ship.
Three centuries later, a team of treasure hunters uncovered Bannister's Golden Fleece in the waters near the Dominican Republic. Robert Kurson tells their intriguing story in his book, Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship.
Now it's YOUR turn to discover some hidden treasure...Are you ready?
