Don't you just love how some sounds become words in their own right? I do. This puzzle is a tribute (of sorts!) to onomatopoeia. Hope you enjoy working towards the answer to the meta, which is a play. Answer and explanation here: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=86028#p86028
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta!

I've never seen it as a play, but I love love love the movie with Michael Caine and Carol Burnett (and several other great actors). Sardines!
I've only ever read the play. I would love to see it - or the movie, after your rave review!

Now I'm worried that I oversold it! YMMV but it just hits my sense of humor just right. I rewatch it every few years and it always makes me laugh until I can't breathe :-)

This seems to be the week of "not in my wheelhouse" metas. I don’t know why, and I’m trying not to be paranoid. If the MEOW follows suit I may need a vacation.

Well, I finished the whole grid, all those somewhat obscure entries, only to realize a few minutes later that I probably just needed the first themer or two!
Very, very cute and clever, Ben! Oh, BTW castle doors need oiling -- CREAK! -- and set some mousetraps -- EEK! :)
After a few incorrect answers, I got it. Really enjoyed the grid. Needed to Google since I never heard of the play.

Being the type of person I am, I going to comment that "Woof" as in, "our war-winning woof" is not onomatopoeia.... unless it is.... maybe if you listen really close to a loom you hear it go "wiff, weeve, woof, weft".....
I'm kind of reminded of the 2000 year old man saying that if you listen very closely to a chicken laying at to precise moment it goes "ehh-ehhhh-egg.."
I was concious of that issue but had trouble finding a suitable replacement!

I was ready to stop with “Tick Tick Boom” or “Pop!” as onomatopeic (sp?) play titles, but needed a nudge to recognize the “noises” “off” the grid. Clever!

A quiet Friday night gave me time to google the top 100 plays of all time, and this was near the top. Never heard of it, but it fit the clever mechanism. Thanks Ben!
