Very nice! I wanted to use the TREE for Stanford but it wasn't symmetrical! Had to sift through several TIGERs of course and 40A said there would be another step. Cute. Happy New Year!
Thanks, Jay. Yes, even a few Muggles have PM'ed me about the backstory. I'm afraid that many of the poor Crosshareistas (great name, BTW) will be totally lost.

Very funny!!! Had a bit of trouble figuring I missed something cause I got NO TB GAIN and thought "dang what is the key thing here" when I remembered there are TWO teams with the name of TIGERS and though one is from BATON-ROUGE the other is from AUBURN. Glad I didn't flag on this one, I didn't make it to the last pageant and was afraid I'd be two for two. Fun start to the year and if this is Carri's inaugural, congratulations! Obviously a Cap'n tutored constructor because this one is clean and fun.
Oh, and this afternoon's bowl is going to be a difficult one for me. I am from PA and have rooted for PSU since 1966 BUT I went to the University of Utah - dilemma....
Thanks, DrTom. I sent you a PM re: our common PA roots. Yes, that is going to be a bit of a dilemma for you this afternoon. Let's hope it's an entertaining game!

I also had NOT BGAIN but was able to backsolve.
I went to Illinois-UC so college football isn’t my strong suit…

Good one! I knew right away that I didn’t want to “be pageanted” but what to do? We’re you looking for where these teams played Bowl Games in 2022? No because they all did not play in a bowl game. So maybe it was the city where the school was located? Aha, that works except there are sooooo many Tigers! Backsolved for “Auburn “. Fun way to start the New Year!
Great job figuring this one out, Ergcat. No Pageant for you!

This my worst subject so I didn't find everything even with Google, but still enough to be sure of the answer given the setup! Nice to get a chuckle today, thanks!
When I realized the answer wasn't going to be Really Rick, or even Not Carri, I found the actual solution. The whole premise is so very clever and fun! A bit of Tiger Trouble but I was pretty sure at least that Princeton wasn't in that league! Thanks, Rick!
Thanks for solving, Cindy. I knew that not everyone would be familiar with the "PAGEANT" event. Here's a link where you can read about the backstory: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?t=36

Thanks for the link. I tried searching on the muggle forum, but I didn't really know what I was doing. Nice to read about it and great tie-in to this meta!

To a puzzler still scarred, lo, these many years later … you really know how to rub it in.
Sorry about that, Chris. I'll be sure to tell "Carri" to ease up next time.

Five years ago already? I was one of the original pageanted group. I figured we had gotten an easy end-of-year puzzle and gladly submitted without too much thought. Never made that mistake again.
Enjoyed the flashback, though.
Yes, mark, the original "Pageant" occurred on Dec. 29, 2017. I hadn't yet discovered metas at that time, so I missed out on the fun. Thought I could maybe experience some of that experience via this tribute puzzle.

After further review...
Years of Pageant paranoia finally come to fruition.
Thanks, Cap'n!
Hey, that's cool, Jim! As a Penn State and UMass alum, I've also seen a few of them play over the years. Thanks for solving!

Nicely done, Cap'n ... even if I did need the nudges to avoid being "pageanted." Best wishes for this fledgling new year and congrats to our Nittany Lions.
