Good point, woozy. I always try for symmetry as another way for solvers to obtain confirmation. Thanks for solving!

The symmetry was a big help. I would have gotten it on the first try if I didn’t spell Guinness wrong the first time :)

Nice puzzle!
I was looking for the G's in the top half of the grid, especially after seeing the central entry.
It took a bit to locate that initial G in the clues.
Thanks for the puzzle!
Thank you, Claudia. We're going to meet up with my mother again in upstate NY, but this time in Hyde Park. Looks like another blizzard on the way again this year!

Luck of the Irish! Ah, the snow will be gone in no time. I'm just hoping you stay high and dry!

The hint in the backstory helped. :) While solving the meta I almost started to ignore the entries because I was missing EDEN and ERIE, and BSTBER looked like nonsense, and I knew I needed to look at the clues instead because GINNES looked almost readable. When I figured out what I was missing, the other half made sense too. (Side note: I always get tripped up by UTOPIA's etymology of "nowhere" whenever I see it clued as best or ideal or similar.)
Thanks for solving, hoover. And I noticed in your forum post that you disagree with Al's favorite beer (i.e. STOUT) selection. I'm sure I'll see other similar comments. What's your favorite brew? I prefer Sam Adams Boston Lager myself.

Root beer.

I had the same solve path and for the same reason about utopia!
One other question--why is Man's laughter particulaly associated with Utica?
Hi Julie. My dedicatee - Al Sisti - is from Utica, NY. It's an inside Muggles joke.

Very fun. I submitted each answer separately so should have read the directions more carefully. Finally put them together and SUCCESS! Totally missed the STOUT hint since I'm not a beer drinker. Thanks
Thanks, Carolyn. Yes, Crosshare only allows 1 correct answer per solver, so I needed to bundle them. Glad you caught STOUT. Did you also notice the cross of RECORD and BOOK that I intended to hint at that other connotation of "Guinness" and SUPERLATIVES?

So clever!

Fun stuff, thanks. Took me a beat to get to GUINNESS, which is ironic given that my folks grew up in Dublin and it's all I drink when I'm over there. OTOH, Ireland is the only place I'll drink it, so I quibble with the characterization of the state-side version. :D :D
Thanks for solving, ajk. My wife and I took the tour of St. James Gate Brewery in Dublin during our honeymoon 25 years ago. Nice city and country that we definitely want to visit again some day.

Cap'n: U R 2 Clever/Funny/Excellent! This was a blast to complete and solve! Thank you for sharing your skillz!
Thank you, Cindy. And thanks for the birthday wish!

Got it after a little snag! Perfect for St Patrick’s Day Week! I’m going to Dublin in May and will visit the Guinness Storehouse and Gravity Bar! Ahhhhhhh
