Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a phrase that describes what each themer has
With sincerest apologies to my US solvers, I tentatively present this puzzle. The answer to the meta is a phrase that describes what each themer has. Answer & explanation: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=148167#p148167
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta!

That was tricky for non-Aussies! But Google came through. Nice one!

This was me trying to demonstrate how we non-US solvers feel some weeks with the WSJ or the Gaffney. ;-)

No doubt! It's like you're playing the game on a harder level than the rest of us. I always enjoy seeing Australian slang, animals, locations, etc. in your puzzles though!

agreed! thank goodness for google!! i tried wayl, watyl, until i saw wattyl was a thing, which pointed me in the right direction :)

Think it was easier for a Brit! Saw Dulux straight away! Thanks Ben!

Your US solvers? Wouldn’t that be like 98% of your solvers? Thanks for the fun clues!

Yes, indeed! In my defence I don't do this to you very often. ;-)

Had an idea where this was going, but confess that I have never heard of any of these. Google was definitely my friend today. Also, the clue at 30D gave me a good chuckle. Thanks for the puzzle, Ben!

Me being a dumb, I didn't even know what to google, I probably could have used a primer... I just turned 58d over in my tiny head and put the first thing that came to mind... thanks Ben for another work of art, sorry for the intrusion

Only knew of Dulux, but that was enough to give me an idea what to google! I hate HATE cryptics, but I think if I had a glossary and someone to teach me how to think like 58D, I could see its appeal.
                  • benchen71 costruttore · 2023-11-15T05:01:42.137Z
They are a lot of fun once you have more familiarity with the language of cryptics!
                  • KayW 🤓9:08 · 2023-11-15T14:23:07.129Z
I needed the nudge #3... I got the right idea from 58D but had never heard of any of those companies. Still fun, and makes me appreciate how hard some of our "parochial" puzzles must be for non-US solvers!
                    • MrTheHan 6:01 · 2023-11-15T20:07:27.234Z
Managed to get the four coats after stumbling down some "alternative" possibilities (HOMES, BEER, BEIGER seemed like they could work with the theme!) but it was satisfying to find the connection once I picked up on Dulux. Took longer than I would care to admit to find the right phrasing for the meta, though!

lol glad I didn't work too hard pre-nudges. Fun concept though, thanks. :)

Aussie solvers should have seen them as quickly as US solvers see US sporting teams or classic US TV shows or US TV hosts or... (you get the idea!)

Not so tricky even for non-Aussies. It was clued enough to be able to google very effectively what was in common with the themers.
