I seem to recall a Gaffney that had the same mechanism (and answer).

Can't believe you went there! On a personal note, it was a slog to have to google every geographical answer. Not sure that's a winning puzzle mechanism . . .
Solving felt like playing party to an inside joke of some kind. Thanks to Google and Wikipedia, I understand it NOW... and learned some solver jargon in the process. Glad to know there's a term for this phenomenon! lol
Thanks, Dow. Yes, I was hoping that solvers would fill in most of the grid leaving just the 6 "Natick" squares unfilled. Then I hoped the answer would stand out and render the Googling unnecessary. We'll see how many solvers are familiar with this bit of puzzle jargon.

Legit laughed out loud after solving. And I was outside. In public. In New Hampshire. Maybe I should take a drive down and see what all the fuss is about.
Hmm, another BF comment. I guess I need to get out more! Thanks for solving!

Oh, Natick was the word I was talking about, no idea what BF means! I should have the comment above mine before posting.

Easy for me to get there, since I live in Watertown. Harder to solve. I used Wikipedia to get the ICK and then kicked myself since in retrospect that HAD to be the answer.
Thanks for solving, DIS. Yes, I was hoping that folks would see the gimmick without doing a lot of Googling.

As you were hoping, I filled the grid except for 6 squares, but I couldn't remember the name for an unguessable crossword answer. So one request of Mr. Google required. Thanks for the fun and clever concept!
And I like to create metas that make people smile. We're a good team!

We enjoyed this even though this joke is before our meta time so to speak. As Boston suburban dwellers this is not nearly as esoteric as the 12 locations in this puzzle
