What Am I Missing?

◆◆ · Di DrTom · Pubblicato 2025-02-26T12:30:34.918Z

Meta Prompt
A singularly odd book of 1939
This meta has been bouncing around in my mind for well over a year. I first got the idea researching another meta and thought, "could I do that" and back then I felt "Nope!" However, I have gotten bolder (no better perhaps but bolder) and while doing a back and forth with Al Sisti on another meta this topic came up and I thought "what the heck I can give it a try", so I did. Thanks soooo much to Al and to KayW, my testers/mentors, who helped me hammer this into shape.
I think it turned out well, but of course I ALWAYS think these turn out well. However, it only matters what YOU think, I hope you all like it.
My bias is that it will play as a S.A.D. because it is soooo simple that you may not see it. However, given how inventive all of you are and your toolchests of solving techniques I am sure a lot will hop on board (or out of the bag as it were).

NUDGES:

Nudge 1] One tester said it should have been named "Vowel Movement".
Nudge 2] Whether people like it or not, they certainly will not be able to utter the hated phrase - "That was Z"
Nudge 3] Something very common is not present in the grid
Nudge 4] Something very common is also not present in the clues
Nudge 5, well actually a mechanical solve] If you evaluate the puz file using the Mechapuzzle utility the answer should be immediate.
THE REVEAL!

Rather easy this week because the solve relies on noticing that there are no E's anywhere in the grid or clues. That makes this a "lipogramatic" text and there is only one book published in 1939 using no E's and it is the book, "Gadsby" (no relation at all to "The Great Gatsby")

Fun aha moment after loading the puzzle into https://boisvert42.github.io/mechapuzzle/.

Yes, I figure Mechapuzzle will be this one's undoing, either that or Vanna White!

That's how I finally got it, after entering multiple selections from https://www.goodreads.com/book/popular_by_date/1939 didn't work. I was sure that it was going to be Finnegans Wake, which is singularly odd in its own way.
    • Berto 2s · 2025-02-26T12:30:34.918Z
Not any??? Amazing construct. I took a bit to fill your grid but got an aha quickly. (This is difficult!!) thank you Dr Tom!
      • DrTom costruttore · 2025-02-26T13:57:29.588Z
You have NO idea how long it took to do the clues! I cannot imagine how difficult it was to write the book because E's are so ubiquitous. But that was part of the fun.

It took me a while to notice what was missing and then needed Google. I have never heard of this book. Very cleverly constructed! Thanks, Dr Tom.

wow, what a difficult construction! Took an additional km to also not contain it in hints.. good job! (as an individual said prior, this is truly hard!)

Yes I originally just had the grid and said, "hmmm, why not!" That was then hours of, "what was I THINKING!!!" But it came together and Al Sisti gave me some good clues for places that mine were difficult but not "E"z

Delightful! I knew what it was as soon as I read the prompt but still enjoyed the solve. Good one, Tom!

Yes, this one was destined to be either a 1 or a 2.5, and with the availability of mechapuzzle it is a 1 no doubt. Still, it was fun to make and it should provide some challenge, particularly to those who don't build these.

I was sure you were going for Finnegans Wake, but when that proved wrong (as did Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats -- because MEOW, right?), I took another look and noticed the no E thing. Quick Google search led me to the right answer. Thanks for the puzzle, Tom!

Well I had to give SOME kind of challenge, though in truth I thought "Madeline", "And Then There Were None", "Johnny Got His Gun" or "Grapes of Wrath" might get some takers.

Wow - grid AND clues... What a challenge!

I had to Google it of course. Is it a varaint on F. Scott Fitzjarald, This Grand Gatsby?

John Gadsby, 50, is alarmed by the decline of his hometown, Branton Hills, and rallies the city's youth to form an "Organization of Youth" to build civic spirit and improve living standards.
Now back to the lipogram: It actually is a fascinating task this author took on.

Got it on the second guess. My first guess was A Void, which was French but there is an English translation, of which I read about 10 pages.

And none in the clues either?! That's impressive! I'd heard of the existence of this book, so I knew exactly what to Google, but I did have to Google.
                            • whimsy 13:21 · 2025-02-27T04:21:13.630Z
Besides the no E's (a real biggie to be sure!) I was also thinking no Q's or V's. So at first I was considering all three to figure it out. But now that I realize that the clues were lacking also, I see why it is what it is. (Clues did have Q and V.) Meanwhile, I'd googled a list from 1939.... Excellent effort and end-product! Thanks, Tom!
                              • DrTom costruttore · 2025-02-27T13:13:07.334Z
Not hard to do one without Q and V really, that happens a LOT, just like J, X and Z. But E's crtainly gav yours truly a hard tim.

                                Ha.
Funny aha moment that came surprisingly late. (FWIW the clues feeling "off" was what did it. I'd have never notice the grid itself)
I was sure it was going to be something about the grapes of Wrath and I breifly thought (R)oar, (R)asp, (R)ump that maybe it would be the Gaps of wath....
                                • lbray53 2s · 2025-02-27T13:43:18.033Z
I spent some time adding I's like CALF - CALIF, ALAS - ALIAS and then deleting I's as in GAIT - GAT, HAIR - HAR with little luck, I noticed that there were no E's. Anywhere! Not on the page (other than the copyright line). GOOGLE did the rest.
                                  • DrTom costruttore · 2025-02-27T16:50:58.291Z
I thought about eliminating that but it would have been FAR too suspicious, besides with a MEOW, at least one E is inevitable, particularly since it comes out on Wednesday. I mean TBurnakis Xword-Muggls.com Madhattrs Nigma on Wdnsdays would have been way too nudgy....😁
                                    • HeadinHome 🤓1:38 · 2025-02-28T06:48:33.316Z
Same!! CAL(I)F = IMAM, ST(I)R = ADO, was looking for CHA(I)R and finally gave up. It just seemed too odd that CALIF and IMAM were both there, for that to be a coincidence.
