Explanation: five spirits or cocktails are broken across two entries... (CHART/REUSE), (GRASS/HOPPER), (MID/ORI), (BASIL/GIMLET), (ABS/INTHE)... they are all alcoholic drinks that are green. Googling "German beer green" yields the meta solution of "Berliner Weisse"... if you ever get the chance to try it, I highly recommend it... the green one is flavored with sweet woodruff syrup. Happy Oktoberfest! (which oddly begins in September instead of October)

      me, solving 39A
Didn't even need any hints! Great find with 1A 6A

Thanks! That was the seed entry - I made sure to place it at 1A since it was the most concealed (in my opinion)… in an earlier version, I split ‘grasshopper’ as (gras/shopper) but the fill was so ugly I had to move things around… I’m going to guess that (grass/hopper) will be the toehold for most solvers

Very nice! Took me a bit to figure out exactly which direction to take green German beer- lots of distraction out there about how that's the normal color for German beer bottles.

That’s a very good point I hadn’t considered - I just added a caveat in the list of hints since I’m getting quite a few green-bottled beer submissions

Fun, thank you! (Definitely heard of most of the drinks, except a 48A 50A — and definitely hadn't heard of BERLINER WEISSE GRUN.)
