Instead of just using the correct dates, I took the difference (so for Pearl Harbor, 8 - 7 = 1) and that obviously didn’t work. I did need the correct numbers to see the hidden message in the grid, though, which I probably should not have had to in retrospect.

I hadn't noticed the year mentioned in 1A, and was trying to think of another country that might have had a civil war going on in 1895. Then I saw 31D and things started clicking. And yes I had to google to confirm some of the dates. (But I did remember the date "the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor", to quote Bluto). Fun one, and educational too. Thanks Capn!

Then I considered the actual dates and looked at the beginning letters of the words. Still rather strange. Well, W starts WASHING -- I could add TON to get another prez. And I think there's a TON in the grid. And D starts DELA -- I could add NO to that to get DELANO! But I doubt there's a NO in the grid... Oh wait, never mind. And that's how it went down for me in this very fun and clever puzzle! Thanks, Rick!

When I finally got it, I wondered how I could not have seen WASHING TON crossing DELA WARE, especially since at Thanksgiving someone mentioned Washington Crossing, PA, which is 10 miles from where we were.LIke Hector, I figured there must be some significance to the incorrect numbers. I tried subtracting the correct ones from the wrong ones (78 - 27 for Lindy, enc.) and got nowhere. Were they just arbitrary?
- Capn Rick costruttore · più di un anno faHi Jay. I actually crossed the Delaware twice on my holiday trip to and from PA. The incorrect dates were somewhat arbitrary, but to avoid confusion, I made sure that none appeared in the grid (i.e. all >75).

Re: 75, I just meant that my "incorrect" dates were > 75 (e.g. LINDY - 78, KENNEDY -76, etc.) so that folks wouldn't try to look for those numbers in the grid.

- DrTom 8s · più di un anno faFunny because I got the GWDRT and thought George Washington Delaware River Throw, but of course he apocryphally threw it across the Potomac. Then I saw the GWT were in GEN WASHINGTON and DR in DELAWARE RIVER. Very nice and, except for not finding the right combo to suit Crosshare for many tries, relatively low anxiety. Nice fill as always.

Washington is crossing at DELA - WARE. I never even picked up on the wrong dates, BTW. Never used any nudges, and swear I did not see any spoilers or answers posted (I know I did this one way late… how did I miss it last weekend??)
