Cool idea and fun solve! I'm not sure if it'd improve the gimmick or not but if you wanted to remove the automatic underlining of 3D in the clue for 1D you could add !@ to the beginning of the clue which serves as a signal to crosshare not to parse the clue for references to other clues.
