While nearly everyone has heard of the Wright Brothers and their aviation achievement, very few people are aware that they were arrested for trespassing at Kitty Hawk. Yep, and to make matters worse, the judge refused to grant them bail. He considered them a "flight risk".
And take a bow, Cap’n! Saw him 40 years ago and still remember this one: The student loan director from my bank called. He said, "You've missed seventeen payments, and the university never received the $17,000. We'd like to know what happened to the money." I said, "Mr. Jones, I'll give it to you straight. I gave the money to my friend Slick, and he built a nuclear weapon with it. And I'd appreciate it if you'd never call again."
I LOVE this guy. Maybe it is a Sunday morning thing but when I read 3D I immediately thought of Steven. It took my brain awhile to catch on. I think that using the down entries hid the mechanism just enough. I was also coming off of working on Mikey's puzzle so the "Wright" clues did not register as they might have otherwise. Great job! SSSmore please.
Thank you, Konnie. Steven's deadpan delivery is priceless.

It took me a while, but I landed it. Very clever as always!! Thanks Rick!(my first thought was: wait, Wendy just did one like this... oh! A different Wright stuff. )
Thanks, Kay. Yes, my "Wright" guy is from Boston. Regarding aviation Steven once asked, "Why don't they make the whole plane out of that black box stuff?"

Nice one, Rick! Gave me some chuckles on a Sunday morning.
Glad you enjoyed it, Hector. Watch out for that girlfriend, though!

Thanks Cap'n! I didn't recognize the quotes so I needed your 3rd nudge, but I was able to get it from there. I'm not very familiar with his standup routines but I remember him as "The Guy on the Couch" from Half-Baked :D
Thanks, SamKat9. Yeah, Steven has been around for quite a while now. It looks like he was last doing shows in April of this year. I've never seen him live, but I would sure like to!

Nicely done! My fave? “I went to a restaurant that serves 'breakfast at any time' So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.”
Recognized some of these immediately, and started thinking, hey he stole these jokes from Ste....oh, right.
If you melt dry ice, can you swim without getting wet?
Used the nudges, but probably would have gotten it without them because I would have been less lazy and looked at other possible orderings of the first letters . Fun stuff, thanks.
Thank you John. I never had the opportunity to see him live, but I sure wish I had! The first joke I ever heard was when he said "I put instant coffee in a microwave oven and almost went back in time."

My first guess was DEADPAN, but I couldn't backsolve to it. So I ordered French toast during the Renaissance.
When I was putting this one together I thought about using DEADPAN. But then I realized that I could "stand up" those themers, and that made the decision for me.
I thought of Steven Wright when I saw the title and one joke in I knew it had to be him. I’m sure there are other eggs than Mort Sahl but I’m working on a phone and it’s hard to search. Loved it Cap
i needed the nudges cause i was sure the meta had to do with homophones or silent letters... looks like i didnt have the right stuff for this puzzle, sorry for the intrusion among you geniuses, but thanks for the puzzle anyway
