Fun one! The hidden in 1A is super clean, and I like the play on Axes for 5A.

Thanks for the puzzle JWords! Would you (or anyone else who comes across this message) mind explaining 2D and 3D please? For 2D I can see how "one's often on runs" is the definition but can't parse "Ship’s captain not very quiet". For 3D I can see how "feature" is the definition while "tit" is the bird to which something has been added internally but where does the "RA" come from? Thank you!

No problem! I’m afraid in both cases they’re abbreviations, so a little bit of crosswordese.
For 2D: A ship’s captain is a SKIPPER, “very quiet” in music is pianissimo, which is abbreviated to PP, so SKIPPER but not PP gives SKIER.
For 3D: Artist is abbreviated to RA (Royal Academician), which is added internally to TIT.
Apologies if that’s a bit unsatisfying, but both are very common crossword abbreviations (in the UK, at least). Thanks for solving!

finally finished this one after coming back to it a month later, 2D stumped me but it's super clever!
