My Word!

· Di woozy · Pubblicato 2023-04-15T05:23:32.849Z

Meta Prompt
The answer to this meta has two parts: The first part is a word; the second part (which is five letters long) is what one does with my word (or any other word) [Either will be accepted but try to find both]
So I still haven't gotten the WSJ Meta Contest of 4/14/23 (I'll take a nudge) so this one is based on a rabbit hole I knew there was no point going down.
The metanism would be quite hard but I put in a lot of meta-meta suggestions to point you in the right direction. I think the grid works very well. As usual my clues run the gamut. I tried to be straightforward, but I can't help but get punchy.

OK, so I was able to solve this one. But CAPNRICK's "Muggle", ALLE's "Genus" and LOOT's "Pillage" sure made for a lot of unnecessary noise. And I still don't know where the E came from!

Oh. "Alice mET A young one..."
      Entirely coincidental.
Hmm.... I suspect you haven't actually figured out the significance of the meta- meta entry of 40A yet.
You solved the meta, but have you figured what "my word" actually is?

        LOGOS

Well, as the clues are symmetric, the E must come for reflected equivalent as the place where the D came from.
Well, the thing about noise... once I get the meta in place I then have to put in the rest of the clues as an afterthought. But it's on afterthought that makes up 85% of the final puzzle. Unintentional noise gets in. I can see the issue with "pillage" but what's wrong with "genus" of "muggle".

I saw that symmetry was involved just after posting my comment.

          Oh, Mu, nu, and pi.
Yeah, I was afraid extras would slip in. But I figured there was simply no way to avoid that what with the frequency of two letter combinations and ETA. But I figure knowing there need to be five symmetrically spaced and the implicit idea they are hidden and not accidental that they'd have to be in word breaks.
          • woozy costruttore · 2023-04-15T16:09:17.921Z
After all, you can't spell META without ETA and what kind of meta would refuse you use "meta" in it's clues?

I went far from home looking for meta #1. Silly me. Nice puzzle, Wooze.

I needed some remedial help to get there but a great meta. FINALLY saw LAMB-DAds and eventually all the rest. Loved the punny and cryptic cluing.

I got to Reads, but planET Arrakis led me to the D in Dune. Deciphering comments shows the CapnRickosity of it all.

Yeah. I figured false positives are impossible to avoid so I added hints to imply (hopefully) that only the out and out clear ones that fit in the grid symmetrically count.
