WOW! Just ... WOW! I realized I had it wrong about halfway through and had to transpose the grid. You could make it a Schrödinger and eliminate the symmetry-breaking entries. They were the hardest for me. I couldn't quite grok why you were saying 'descriptor' at first (6A, 3D). Awesome puzzle. How big a grid could you do of this?
I did consider a Schrödinger, but when I discovered the DOWN/ROWS pair I figured it'd be a nice little aha.
In terms of something bigger, you'd have to get very lucky with pairs of entries, or even looser with the definitions. Or maybe cut some squares from the top-left corner of the grid so not everything need be 5+ letters long. If you want to give it a go, please tag me!
so cool - i got lucky by putting anna first for across, but the car- stumped me i kept thinking chemical endings... genius level construction and cluing
That was wonderful Kieran. I was having a hard time understanding 1D and 1A, but after filling in the rest, I had to reveal the O. CarTOON and CarPOOL were my favorite. It's beautiful how well this puzzle fit together.

Really well done! Car- were my favorite clues and last entries.
