Puzzle inspired by a children's book I loved as a kid. Please read the spoiler-tagged text after solving.
This puzzle was inspired by a recent crossword that clued CARP as "Gefilte fish ingredient". While I think that's a great clue, my sister (a relatively new solver) pointed out that according to the children's book "How Yussel Caught the Gefilte Fish", any fish could be a gefilte (and in reality, gefilte fish can be made from many types of fish, though carp is a popular choice). In the book, Yussel, a young boy, goes out fishing with his father to catch the gefilte fish for Shabbat dinner that night. However, he is disappointed when he catches a carp, pike, and trout, but no gefilte. In the end, through the magic of Shabbat/family/cooking, Yussel's mother transforms the fish he caught into gefilte fish. As a tribute to the book (and to gefilte fish), I thought I'd make this puzzle. My only regret is that I couldn't find a good grid set up that included HORSERADISH, a common gefilte fish accompaniment and 11-letter word.
