Had an idea that wouldn't let go so trying this atypically-sized 12 x 12 (which as Kate and Joon mentioned in Boswords last night, is a tricky length to include otherwise). Wouldn't say it's themed (though the seed entries are pretty obvious) and I may have held on too tightly to them, but between sentiment and the fact that somehow triple stacks came together, I have decided to go with it, and tried to clue surrounding entries as easily as possible around the rough patches. That said, feedback (however critical!) would be VERY MUCH WELCOMED. As ever, don't be shy about the Google or the check/reveal. Anyhow, hope it is an enjoyable solve!

I think the main problem areas for me were 23A crossing 5D and 24D, and 30A crossing 22D. I probably would have done DSO/ESSO with that crossing, but maybe I'm just out of the loop. :) Fun puzzle!
Also, any bright ideas on how to clue 23A or 5D (or anything else, honestly) at an easier level? Thanks again!

I thought 5D was a great clue! The seed entries were a big help overall; it probably would have been a lot harder without having gotten those right away.
Thanks so much for solving and for your feedback and encouragement! Honestly I didn't even spot 30A/22D as a sticking point — and that said, I think your modification is definitely more friendly to the higher-frequency crosswordese (accepting that either way is quite gluey!)
Love the triple stacks, and the 1A/40A link is terrific!
I have way too much time on my hands right now, wo here are a couple of thoughts on the left and right center. If you change NANDON to NANDO’s (multinational peri-peri chicken franchise) and CUARON to CLAROS (cigars), you can eliminate the Philippine vocab. And if you change SIDE to SILO and DIMS to LIMO or LIME, you’d have DOA or DEA instead of DSA (slightly better) and OSSA instead of ESSA (again, slightly better, though still crosswordese). Eliminating OSSA/ESSA would take a bit more work – ROTIS could become ROTOR and you could make accommodating changes to SIDE and DSA to make ESSA become ORSO. It’s also possible to make ESSA into ASST, PSST, ESSO, or ISSA, with varying qualities of surrounding fill. Or you could just tell me to mind my own business, which is both the path of least resistance and entirely appropriate!
Sometimes the initial filling may be only 30-50% of the work, and the rest is in clearing and refilling those less desirable areas with better alternatives. That's where patience and persistence really come into play - and it can certainly test your patience! Keep at it, and each fill iteration (and future puzzles) will improve!
Thanks! (This is both helpful and what I asked for, so I'm certainly not going to tell you to mind your own business!)
The common thread I feel in all these tradeoffs is balancing novel clues in my voice with accessibility (which is often correlated with familiarity) for the solver. I want people to be aware of CUARON and DSA and ROTIS and ESSA, but that doesn't mean that they are already aware.
So this may be about me having more patience to make this a more gradual project of introduction… which conveniently is aided by constructing more :)
I appreciate the solve and especially you sharing your perspectives with such constructive and specific detail!
Nice work - the triple stacks were super fun! Took me embarrassingly long to come up with the second part of 1A, but I'll blame it on all those early 2010s stores dying off
I was just reading about ESSA so that helped! There were a number of clues/answers I didn't know but I guessed right, or could infer like Riksdag from Reichstag. Anyway, I enjoyed it!
34A: I had some trouble here. I usually call such things “gumball machines.”
40A: I am also fond of this series. Janet is my favorite character. It jumped at me with just a few crossers. Kiwi and I are now thinking about binging it.
I agree with you on ice cream. We go to Clementine’s when we need something less vanilla.
