It’s listed on Wiktionary as an alternate spelling- and it’s been clued as Indian bread in the NYT crossword plenty of times. Though honestly I would never spell naan this way normally, and wouldn’t have clued it this way if not to tie in with RUPEES
Loved the solve, the theme, and many of the clues! (Especially liked 52A because I remember seeing so many SURGEON FISH during my first time snorkeling at length a couple years ago.)
The fill was actually really clean! The only entry I felt was at all off was 31A since that is not a usual spelling. The only clue tweak that stood out was 22A where I’d say “Gators’ kin” since then it’s more parallel (informal names). (And agree with Jeff on 2D which I never know how to spell, but that's all me!)
I like the puzzle @girlcow and the theme concept you had. I thought a lot of the cluing was terrific ("Ranch hand's handful" had me laughing out loud).
You're probably already aware in the fill that consistency in the theme entries is typically valued among publishers, so having all the aquatic elements either appear at the front or at the back adds consistency there (it means not having both GAMESQUID and SHARKLOAN for example, but picking one direction and building all to match that pattern). And DENIECE and NIECE is a pretty big overlap, especially among crossing words. But that said, I really like the direction you were going with this, and the "flipping" of a commonly known two-word phrase is a neat hook for a puzzle like this. It was fun for me!

I always solve by doing all the acrosses, then all the downs, then another shot at across and another at downs, and only then jumping around to empty spots.
Solved it on my second across run, so not that hard.

that bottom left corner kicked my ass (and I still don't get the pun in fish surgeon... kept trying words like reef because it kind of sounds like chief...) otherwise awesome and clever
