BUILDING BLOCKS (which I now know are really called CHARADES) are a type of clue where you have to build up the answer by sticking the answer to lots of mini-clues together. Often they consist of (a) clues to the individual bits and (b) a clue to the whole word, for example "Young adult joins the Navy to get wool (4)" = YA (Young Adult) + RN (Royal Navy) = YARN = wool. However, sometimes the constituent bits join up to make a compound phrase or word so well known that the clue to the whole word is thought unnecessary, e.g. "Inexpensive type of fish? (10)" = CHEAP (inexpensive) + SKATE (type of fish) e.g.2 "School principal is longing (9)" = HEAD (School Principal) + ACHES (is longing) Many (but not all) of the clues in this puzzle are one-clue building blocks. The rest are other types of pun. I hope you enjoy it.
