I latched on to the fact that the number of (seemingly random) words in each of the long entries was 3-3-4, so their lengths would form a US format phone number (528-465-4434) and kept trying to get that to spell something. Unfortunately LAT INK HIFI does not seem to have ever been a phrase in common use.
Eventually I noticed some of those same letter triplets I had been staring at in the entries themselves, and got to the right mechanism.
VERY nice! Took me the longest time to see the first part and then I was trying next in line, middle letter, etc. and the title then struck me, "Why Dial-M....OH darn, I know!" Lovely Aha, and I called it Ma Bell for MANY years.

Saw the letter runs right away, but had a hard time linking it to the phone dial. The hint definitely made the light bulb go off. Thanks for the puzzle, Peter!

Ugh, got the 436822 almost right away but I kept thinking I needed to plug it back into the phone and figure out what was actually being "dialed". GENVAC? IFOTAB?!
No doubt where the themers were, and that you were trying to combine some odd letters in them. Took a while to figure out… I figured it had to do with letters/numbers on a phone dial (first tried the first letters of each theme word (B-I-P etc) and use the grid letters corresponding to those dial numbers. Obviously that was jibberish. Then something made me notice MNO when I was looking at that part of a dial, and it clicked. This was so fun to decipher!

Great theme. Thanks for the nudges, I was able to get the meta.
thanks for a fun and top-notch puzzle... was unfamiliar with the term but a quick google search (parsed correctly) confirmed it
meta first step came immediately during the solve... second step left me briefly wondering what to do with the numbers 43, 68, 22... there is no entry 68 so went the grid number route to mull over the lovely sounding name of Mabell...
do you happen to know what the TOP QR SCANNER for android is? JK LOL i don't actually need it just trying to give the neglected numbers some love and wondering if you chew or SWALLOW XYZAL allergy pills
