Fitting ending - I'll miss the PUN-ky Brewster Saturdays and hope we meat again (so don't chop them completely or we will roast you!). Your bale pun was a breath of thresh air and I went back to check out the book one again. Thanks for a lot of fun and a fair number of challenges.
Explanation: Seven symmetrically placed entries can be placed after the word "WORK": LOAD, AROUND, BOOK, OUT, ROOM, ETHIC, DESK. The initial letters spell LABORED, the answer to the meta in honor of Labor Day. (Slight asymmetry in the grid to accommodate AROUND/ETHIC and slightly better fill in SE).

Summer's over! Actually dislike hot & humid but love The Summer of Solves. Thanks for the fun, Mikey!
Somehow I missed the last one — that was a clever mechanism. This one was perfect for a quick diversion before tackling the day’s (ugh) labors. Thanks!

Hope you didn't have to LABOR too hard coming up with this one.
I definitely overthought this meta, once I saw that it used a frequent mechanism. From the title I knew that I was supposed to look for the letter after WORK, I just couldn't just get myself to test add that word to the grid entries. If I had even seen one...But when Mikey told me to look at the title again, all of a sudden the cobwebs blew away, followed by a head slap and a quick solution. Good way to end your summer series. Thanks.
