Not all the clues in this crossword are based on the word WAY, but some are. WAY is another much used word in crosswords. Occasionally, it is an alternative to POINT or DIRECTION as a clue to N,S, E or W, but usually WAY = ROAD, STREET, PATH, DRIVE, AVENUE etc or an abbreviation of them (RD, ST, DR, AVE). MOTORWAY, meanwhile, in British crosswords, is usually M or MI (the M1 being the UK's foremost motorway) and RAILWAY = LINES = RY. British crossword compilers often don't move with the times, so it's not uncommon to get references to BR (British Rail - the old state-owned railway company which hasn't existed for 40 years) or even to Bradshaw or Beeching (google them, if you're sufficiently interested). But sometimes WAY does actually mean METHOD. And ONE'S USUAL WAY OF DOING THINGS = modus operandi = MO. Thanks so much for making such an accessible full-size cryptic! (I was initially going to avoid it for the size, but your teaching has gotten me a long way and it was fun!)
So many good clues, but clearly 19D has to be the winner. 17A was new to me (despite living in Chicago, the "second largest Polish city in the world”). In 36D I learned “titivate” as well. I couldn’t quite suss the wordplay in 37A.

For 37A. Knock out = KO, lines = RY (for railway). In a tangle is an anagram indicator leading us to an English city.
Thank you so much for persisting with my monster of a crossword and for your lovely, lovely comment.
17A was a rubbish clue by me cheating, because I desperately wanted to use the down clues, but could think of no English word that was M_DN_ for the across (I used to live in Lodz, which is the second largest Polish city in Poland)
37A Knockout = KO Lines = railway = NY In a tangle = anagram
