      Three in Italian is TRE. We are to enter it going down, and "in flames" -- that is, contained inside the word FIRE. Today's NYT crossword repeats that idea a few times.

        I beg to differ on 3D. I have never once said "ow" when I’ve stubbed my toe. My normal toe stubbing exclamation starts with the letter F!
