  Fun! I think "Lightens" should be "Lighten" to match the tense of the answer, and 4D might be improved by more clearly indicating that ET comes after IB ("alien passes education program"?). Otherwise really enjoying your foray into cryptics!

  I always appreciate mini-cryptics because even if I get just a few of the entries, I’m not left staring at a gigantic mostly-empty grid

  This time I got all of them except 5A — I see the definition (“text entries”) now and the B-LOGS parsing but don’t quite get the wordplay yet.

    I think they were going for B as an abbreviation of black and LOGS meaning big branches.

  Nice clues, fun enough to solve. Education program is something in UK (I'm in US, don't know that reference)? Next level on cluing is to have the clues themselves have improved meaning, i.e., more clues like 1!
