Explanation: 4 Latin phrases suggest locations in the grid. After death/SUICIDE; in the middle; under penalty/REDCARD; before war/COLD. Writer STAN LEE and the state of NEW YORK are both associated with the same motto.

I love this meta! I decoded three of the four phrases, but IN MEDIAS RES had me stumped until I read your explanation. But it makes perfect sense! Well done, indeed.

Hmm. I still don’t quite follow. How are you meant to get to “Stan Lee” and “New York” from the info in the puzzle?
        • benchen71 🤓7:56 · 2022-04-09T22:43:35.778Z
After SUICIDE comes STAN, then LEE is the middle of the puzzle; NEW is located under REDCARD, and YORK is before COLD (WAR).

Some nice clues! Stumped by the meta. I suspected something was up with 25A because of the way it was clued. But I connected 16A with 5A, and then I couldn’t find connections for 26A or 61A so I abandoned that train. I kept trying to tie in 36D thinking it must be relevant because of the oblique clue but I couldn’t make it work.

This was so damn good! The mechanism was so novel and intricate… I’m kicking myself for not translating all the phrases including the title… I hope you make more metas :)
