CHANGING ENDS come in various types, but they always involve SWAPPING THE FIRST AND LAST LETTER OF THE WORD. Sometimes compilers like making it more difficult for you by not actually stating the word whose first and last letters you have to swap in the clue - they just provide a definition of it, along with a definition of the answer. e.g. "Changing ends of cleaning cloth, find it's coated in iron oxide (6)" Cleaning cloth = DUSTER Change the ends = RUSTED = coated with iron oxide. Some (but not all) of the clues in this crossword involve changing ends.
