                The theme answers are solidly in my wheelhouse but I couldn't get any further with it. I submitted a five-letter guess just to get it over with. 🙄

                  I also couldn't figure out the connection between the theme answers and the correct solution. Is it something to do with 49A? Otherwise I'm drawing a blank (heh).

                    I don't get it either. After seeing the ghost names I found a few configurations of PAC in the grid, but no dice.

                          Yeah, Will emailed the whole explainer. It was really elaborate and I never would have figured it out on my own. The original Japanese names of Pac-Man ghosts are coincidentally also names of American cartoon characters: Shadow, Speedy, Bashful, and Pokey. (1/2)

                            (2/2) There are four clues in the puzzle that point to each of those alternate characters (e.g., "Mouse user, to a developer"). Mouse = Speedy Gonzales. The first four letters of those answers spells BUGS, another cartoon character.
