Meta Prompt
What geographic location completes the set?
This puzzle had its genesis on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 9, when Peter Abide and I were on Discord, trying to co-solve a Fireball meta. Peter had come up with what we both thought was 100% for sure the correct metanism; alas, it wasn't . . . nor was the answer we finally submitted, truth be told. I liked Peter's idea so much, though, that (with his imprimatur, of course!) I created a meta using it. Here's hoping you enjoy this puzzle as much as I did composing it. Thanks to Peter for all his help with this one, and to Joe Ross, as always, for his formatting know-how. NUDGE: An alternate prompt for this puzzle might be "What U.S. state completes the set?"

OMG, I stared at this when it came out last night and had no clue. I was getting furious at Wendy and Peter (note: I do not resemble Tinkerbell in the slightest!) for what I thought was an absurd mechanism, trying to figure out which two- or three-word M-alliterative place y'all had chosen. Cracked open the laptop this morning and saw what I missed last night!

Great job, Wendy and Peter! Love this "Down East" state, and love the mechanism as well!

Thanks, Clark! I love this state, too ... but to be honest it was chosen because it was tough to find a fun themer that started with MAI. And the metanism was all yours -- well, OK, a third of yours.

Funnest part was trying to scan the map in my head to find the 8th M… state! Well done and one I will keep to introduce newbies to metas!

A good newbie prompt would ask “What U.S. state would complete the set?”

Maine is one of the few states I've never visited though I haven't been to Michigan either. I'm working towards visiting all of them, not just those starting with 'M'.
                    • Wendy Walker constructor · 2024-12-02T20:12:12.200Z
Maine is awesome, Eric! I was lucky enough to have a high-school friend whose family had a rustic vacation place on Lake Megunticook. There was no electricity and we had to pump water and use glow-sticks for light -- but really who cares when you can swim in a ravishingly beautiful pristine lake (OK, it was cold!), see millions of stars and hear loons at night, and feast on lobster rolls? As for Michigan, I've only flown through Detroit so that doesn't really count.

The benefit of solving and building crossword puzzles is that I know there are 8 states that begin with M! Of course even then I managed to submit a wrong answer because I wrote them down incorrectly.
I have to admit I wanted to try to force it to be the 8th continent and was trying to see if I could make Oceania (with the mention of islands) or Zealandia (or even MAdagascar) the answer. Thanks Wendy for a MARvelous MONday MISsion with some MAInly MISchievous MICroscopically MINute changes. Luckily I was extricated from the rabbit trail to the main path.

Stopped at postal codes, but even so Maine was top on my list. If I'd persevered to three letters due to two letter duplications, I would have solved without nudging. I think my brain got mixed with the turkey stuffing on this one...

I've watched too many Pirates of the Caribbean movies. haha In "World's End" there were pirates representing major regions and they used nine pieces of eight. Of course, it didn't help that the first thing I noticed was MARKS matching with YENS as German and Japanese currency, but that wasn't gonna get me very far! :P ... Cool idea. Thanks, Wendy and Peter.

I saw the "M"s, but had to both use the nudge and then brute-force my way to the right answer. (The comments helped me back-solve it so I think I get it now… but I'm not sure where I should have looked to figure out the metanism going forward.) I enjoyed the basic puzzle though!
