Oooh, I don't know enough science to be able to tell if 5A makes surface sense, but it looks really good and I love it! I also think 1D and 3D are very clever. My only nitpick would be in 2D: (1) You can "massage (the letters of) X," but I don't think "X massage" makes grammatical sense? It sounds like you'd want "X massaged" there. (2) I don't know about "will" as a connector. It feels like "be" is the key part of that, and it's missing. I understand why you've done it, because the surface sounds really good as is. I'm just giving my read on it.
Thanks! Yeah, 2D stretches things a little, but I thought it was close enough, and I really liked the surface. I originally worded it in a way that made more grammatical/crossword directions sense, but it made the answer past tense, and I ran out of time. I'd like to take another swing at the idea of that one. 5A is...a fun clue, but I would consult a doctor for medical advice.

You may have had fewer problems with a different synonym; "A weak massage is stirring", perhaps?
I take Aaron's point about grammar, but is "A weak massage" so different from "Massage a weak"?
