  The word for serious is “earnest” not “ernst”.

  Also “Stolen from” does not work as a clue for “theft“. An accurate clue would be “Stealing”.

  If it's a cryptic, then I've missed something. The grid shape is cryptic, with each clue at least 50% checked; the reason that works in a cryptic is because every clue has two solutions—a straight definition, and wordplay that leads to the same answer. So for instance, 4A could be clued as [Ran out of a specific wine, returned with a savory meat (5)] as BAC+ON<, a reversal of "No cab[ernet]". By contrast, in a standard crossword, every letter would be crossed by an Across and Down clue—necessary in this case given the imprecision of most of these clues (for instance, 1D would be HABITUAL, 2D doesn't necessarily have to be "older," and 3D isn't a standard English word. 5A is also the wrong part of speech.
