    Very clever clueing!
2D In the UK HEFT means "to lift" or "to judge the weight"; Chambers suggests that "weight" is a US meaning. Nevertheless, it was a most entertaining clue.
    Thanks for the puzzle.

Thank you! I wasn’t aware of that US/UK difference, that’s good to know.

Tough grammar for me on this one, as well as some usages I wasn't familiar with (assuming I'm parsing properly). RA = "academy"? Where's the "I" coming from in 4A? I rather liked 6A and 5D, so I think I'm just confused.

Hi! I see it this way: RA is an abbreviation for Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy or simply academy. In 4A I is an abbreviation for "a" seen in the clue.

Yes, that’s the parsing I intended

I'm a US solver, so I'm not familiar with the Royal Academy, but unless RA is commonly used to indicate a generic, lowercased "academy" (as opposed to the Academy), I think that might be unfair, even if your intent is inferable. Then again, abbreviations are a very flexible subject among setters; ultimately, you can use any that you like. (I recall some people bristling at my use of E for "everyone.")
As for A = I, in the sense that they both mean "one," I guess? But that makes this clue an indirect anagram, which you're free to use, but which I'm sadly going to continue to miss-parse. I appreciate seeing the other vantage points; I'm always looking for new synonyms/indicators I might be able to make use of. :)
