Two entries in this grid are not quite right. One of them is missing a word that should go after the word that appears in the grid, and the other one is missing the same word, but this time it should go before the word that appears in the grid. What's the missing word?
Woodworker note: the two sides of a dovetail joint are called the pins and the tails. There is no tenon in a dovetail; a tenon is part of a mortise & tenon joint. The mortise is the hole (traditionally a square/rectangular hole, but it now often has rounded corners) and the tenon is the matchine piece that goes into that hole.
Interesting! Not being a woodworker myself, I can only go by what previous constructors have done for this, and some variation of [Dovetail component] is pretty common https://crosswordtracker.com/answer/tenon/. (Variations on [Mortise insert] are also common though.) Wikipedia tells me some dovetails are types of mortises https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortise_and_tenon#Types, so maybe that's why it's a common clue.
Yeah, in a sense, there could be a way to call parts of some varieties of dovetail joints mortises, in that you're cutting out a portion of the wood in order to accept a complementary chunk from the joining part.
But I think that basically all traditional woodworkers- who are notorious for arguing endlessly about completely inane things, like whether it's better to cut pins first or tails first, or whether bevel up are superior to bevel down planes- would be united in looking at you like you have 3 eyes if you tried to tell them that a dovetail joint has a tenon :-)
Cutting a dovetail joint — by hand with a back saw and a wood chisel — is a 3D puzzle construction. so a bit of overlap between those two populations would not be surprising.
Certainly beyond my skill level at the moment. Time constraints have only allowed investing in much simpler joinery. I look forward to retirement in a few decades when I can tackle such projects.
I have mixed feelings...on one hand, cool puzzle. On the other hand, "Two all beef patties, special sauce...." etc will be stuck in my head all day now haha.
