Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a fitting word
"Be careful what you wish for." Truer words were never spoken. Several times Mike and I have heard "you two are such punsters, you ought to do a puzzle together!". Well Muggledom, that day has arrived, we toiled, we chuckled, we pulled out our absolute best (or worst as the case may be) punning hats and went to town. We even though of asking the past VP to review it because we wanted to spare no Ex Pence!
The result we think is a pretty darn good puzzle and, in our none too humble (to us humility is when the room is too full of hot air) opinions, is a real chuckle or groan fest. If you cannot think of what the clue is getting at you probably need to ask yourself, "now what might these two have been thinking of?" (by the way, if you can do that consistently and get the correct answer, there is reason seek help)
The puzzle is probably a 3 on the pun-ishment scale: (while the puns are a 10 on the puzzlement scale)
Difficulty level:
2 inch slice of Devil's Food (Piece of Cake)
Inventor in Urgent Care (Watt, ICU)
** Like Reddy the cat's partner from the animated series (Kinda Ruff)
Questionable collection of believers (Iffy Cult)
Chance for a church song (Hymn possible)

Nudges will be posted (and if we cannot find enough posts we will use stanchions instead) on Friday and we will be available by PM for direction or interpretation.
Good luck, and believe me we are sure you will be led astray by words intended to deceive.

Nudges - YAY!!!
Nudge 1] As usual the title gives away the mechanism, but admittedly it is subtle here
Nudge 2] The meta answer is 8 letters long
Nudge 3] Sometimes the path lies in the answers, sometimes in the clues, and sometimes...
Nudge 4] Are their 8 things that you might identify as themers based on a characteristic
Nudge 5] When have you EVER known either of us to be succinct?

Releasing that cat was quite an act, you can now brag about the grab and it could even be said from a dais? 😁

I probably would have adored that answer, but I'm afraid Crosshare would not have.

This reminds me of another Dr. Tom puzzle. One of these things is not like the others. Well, maybe more than one.

What, reuse a previous idea, certainly not. I may not be an elegant man but I am a gentleman and would not do that. I might come close but not exactly, though this might be an instance where the devil lived in the details. Just as long as you don't become bored, get robed up and make this speel before you sleep.

Well merci me! That was actually one of the first jokes I got when I was a kid trying to study French. Three felines are floating past Notre Dame on a log in the middle of the river when it rolled over. The following day in the Paris Match the headline was: Un, Deux, Trois Cat's Sank!!!

Probably the fault of the nimrod who constructed Monday's puzzle. That guy really thinks he is first in line and that is an L of a thing...

It was rapid fire because we were running and gunning while punning but then we went outside so we were sunning and running and gunning while punning. That was fine until Mike realized he had to write out some letters for people who owed him money, then we were dunning while sunning and running and punning. Then Mike said to me, "let's swing past the convent"...it was there I drew the line.

Well the work day has been too long for me to be punny, so I will just say thanks for the fun! It took me forever to get the grid done, but the meta fell just a bit easier.
                                  • DrTom constructor · 2023-06-29T13:15:55.352Z
Yes, that seems to be the consensus; sometimes you have to reach a bit when understanding what the clue is saying but everything is there. With lots of our puzzles, and this one in particular, the rule is "go for the pun or the fun" because if you try to solve them straight you'll be there forever. It is probably more like a cryptic except that we were trying to be amusing not clever. I personally can never solve a whole cryptic because I am looking for the funny and they aren't really designed that way. I mean a puzzle that starts with "Place to get a shot of drum = RIM". and "Part of QED that might be an electronic vermin = ERAT" should have told you all you ever needed to know about how that grid was going to be. Glad you stuck with it, even if it was like the "Riddler's Revenge" roller coaster in Valencia, CA....you know, a puzzling ride! (couldn't leve it alone. could you Tom?)
                                  • Laura M 🤓16:40 · 2023-06-29T08:03:47.233Z
I didn't see it and then I did. Fun, and great cluing!

Of course it was "then I did" because we wanted to keep "it hidden" (sorry that was too good to pass up)
                                    • Berto 🤓2:15 · 2023-06-29T13:27:42.206Z
Spent a lot of time looking for pairs of synonyms / related words in the grid (cut from same cloth), Rodin/Degas, Dye/Rinse, Sega/Atari, Nile/Rio(?) - and Milk/Cream - but the cat didn’t want the cream. But it did make me look at Diary/Dairy and the penny dropped! Fun grid, fun solve, thanks to the pair of you!

What a dastardly little rabbit hole, and we didn't even intend or know about that...though it is certainly not a bad idea, hmm. Thank you for solving, we figured the moment people saw 1 word clues they would say, "Well THAT'S odd for those two, must mean something". Heck we would use at least 4 words to clue one or singular (A type of sensation).

Not to mention how you CUT and KNIT back together the key clue words letters into new words, which you manged to FIT in (symmetrically, no less!) as across grid answers. Quite a feat, guys.
