  I won't tell you how many times I tried to make 1A S(COW)S or S(CAM)S. I think the shorter your surface (like 1D), the more it's going to stand out if anything's imprecise. Cryptically, that's solid: [Rascal] is a definition, [camps] is an anagrist, and [weirdly] is the anagrind. Grammatically it's fine as well, but from a surface sense, what does [Rascal camps weirdly] mean? It's sort of non-specific. Ditto with 2D, where I think both pieces are fantastic from a cryptic sense, but they feel forced together.

  I want to be clear: your cryptic sensibilities are really good, and you're making nice word associations that are fun for us solvers. And you should absolutely ignore everything I'm typing if this is the clue style you're going for. I'm only passing along some of what I've been learning. Cheers!
