  Here's the wash-up: ACROSS. 1A. Reversal of "exceptions" = BUTS. The surface reading is meant to be Linux-related. 4A. Double definition. 7A. Subtract half of "Homer" = PIGEON. 8A. "Penny" = P + subtraction of "one" = I from "once more" = AGAIN. 9A. Subtraction of "Trumpist slogan" = MAGA from "Arsenal" = MAGAZINE.

  DOWN. 1D. "Bob" = S + "cut" = LOP. Apologies for this bit of pre-decimal coinage trivia. 2D. TO given literally + "fire" = ZAP reversed ("up"). 3D. "ask" = BEG + initial letters from "ask not". 5D. Hidden ("sported by") in "wWIGenerals". 6D. "Pen" = RUN (as in e.g. "chicken run") + first letter of "Edda".
