CROW is a hard string to hide in longer answers but it works great with the CROWBAR revealer and the "murder" mystery pun, so I had to go for it.

I freely admit I had no idea what was going on while I was solving… but now I see it and that's so clever!

            Nice puzzle, I liked 22A.
            I don't get 14A, 16D, 23A, 35D, and 38A.

"-" clues typically indicate a continuation of an answer that starts somewhere else in the grid. CROWBAR means that each of the four bars in the grid represents the word CROW, so you get 13A OVERCROWDED, 8D DECROWNED, 26D ESCROWING, and 36A MICROWAVING.
