Which ones? Arizona=Phoenix is a mythical bird; as is the Roc. Ohio = Columbus- columbus day is observed in Oct but many have replaced it with Indigenous Peoples Day. Nebraska = Lincoln. In crossword puzzle IKE is a more common entrie than EISENHOWER much as ABE is a more common entry than Lincoln-- to me those were "common knowledge" I had to look up Providence in Merriam Webster to get the meaning of frugal (which did stir things in me; I think of providence as the attribute of will and grace of high authority and... well, I guess somewhere I hear my grandmother use it as provision of economic practicality... sort of. South Carolina; Columbia had to be back engineered. At this point I had the solution and we needed and entry beginning with E and that was only EMS. A google for "Outer ware, Columbia" verified they made jackets and outerware. And come to think of it, it's a pretty common brand I had heard of. Unlike EMS outer ware which I had never heard of but which were googlable as well.

After solving the first four, the answer had to be PIERRE. And since there were only two grid answers that start with "R", RESTRAINT had to be the one that went with PROVIDENCE. But I was unaware that providence also had the meaning of frugality.

That was fun!

Spent so much time squinting at a certain other puzzle this weekend that I missed the capital I in the prompt for quite some time! Great puzzle, Will!

I overlooked the I as well for a short time as I was searching for the missing capital letter. A serif font would have made that easier.

I missed the SC
... well, I saw the SC but as they were in a reasonable phrase and as there was no state with the postal code SC (dope slaps may occur without warning) I figured they weren't part of the puzzle.

That was a lot of fun, and very clever!

Fun! And like others, I learned a new definition for Providence.

Great puzzle, Will. I thought sure I had the answer and finally realized that I needed to take it one more step.

Very nice misdirection. The EISENHOWER was particularly clever. I never saw until the end that you had given me the answer (albeit the translation) in 32D. Stumped me for some time, thanks for the course correction

Nice one, especially the subtle overtones of the answer in the symmetrically placed 1D and 32D.

Nice. We had to try Little Rock first, you know, but this was great.
