Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a poem
Here's another "week 4" challenge for you (rather than frustrating you with an unsolvable "week 5"!) The answer to the meta is a poem. Answer & explanation: https://xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=165731#p165731
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$10 gives you access to 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game. You won't quite know what to expect: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, sometimes all of those, and sometimes none! One thing is for sure, these are some of the more creative metas my brain has been able to come up with. And there's more: this time there's a mega-meta!

Coming up with the X message was tricky since the two parts share a middle letter! :D

I almost always try step 1 in every meta, and I never get anything, so this was a lovely surprise!

By "step 1" do you mean examine the diagonals of the grid? If so, I usually check them out, too. You never know!
          • Dave C 3s · 2024-04-30T14:00:32.647Z
Quite straight-forward, but what a masterful construction!

Love the poem! Unfortunately, I don't think I was able to get any easter eggs into this one.

Of course I tried to enter the entire poem as my answer... apparently Crosshare has a 100 character limit on meta answers! LOL. Very impressive puzzle, Ben, thank you.

I was wondering if anyone would do that. At the 11th hour I considered changing the meta prompt to say "poem title", but decided it would be too much work! :D

Excellent! I immediately thought of Meg when I solved this one -- her "step 1 strategy" that worked on my "Make Mine Marvel" puz :D Nice one, Ben!

BRILLIANT construction. Never heard of the poem but I LIKE it. Great job Ben, and probably not a 4 because when you look for the X there is really only one place to look that makes sense. Thanks for the addition to my education, that is twice now. You are patching any cracks in my knowledge with gold....

NOW I see why the clues were so weird!
My path to solving was just thinking about the classic treasure map line, “X marks the spot.” The center of the grid looks X-ish, then I thought to read the 2 big diagonal lines and that was that. Thanks for making me feel clever… but not as clever as this construction!
                                • benchen71 constructor · 2024-05-01T11:08:13.128Z
Hee hee, and there I was hoping to make the clues seem as "normal" as possible (that is, as normal as MOAT clues get!) :D
                                  • HeadinHome 🤓5:10 · 2024-05-01T23:46:41.474Z
Well just SOME were weird, or at least oddly specific.. 17A, 30A, 41A (“lucid, mentally”, where just lucid would do).
                                • whimsy 🤓16:33 · 2024-05-01T18:39:34.918Z
Well, I actually found easter eggs/bunny trails that waylaid me. ROLLCALL, SPACEK, SUSS, ASST, and AAAS? Drop a bit of the ending (or not) and stick in an X -- you get ROLEX, SPACEX, SUSSEX, ASTEX (Aztecs) and AAASEX (Asics). So I hunted for sneakers and watches etc. for a while. And in the clues? 42A = UNIX, 27 D = ANTIX (Antics). But I knew it had to be tighter and much better than that -- and it was! Impressive, Ben -- Thanx!

lol I suck at seeing diagonal things. Knew of course that many of the clues were wonky, but never would have gotten there without nudge 2. :)
                                    • ajk 9:00 · 2024-05-02T15:51:45.814Z
also, lol, I did in fact try the first letter of every clue 😂

Very impressive! I needed the hints, I was trying to find small Xs in the grid somehow but I hadn't considered the full diagonals.
                                        • KayW 🤓8:23 · 2024-05-02T21:26:28.166Z
Wow!!! Amazing construction - the diagonals and then wording all the clues. Well done, Ben. Thanks! I was so far out in left field on this one. I got fixated on the surf/shore concept. I found all the locations in the clues/entries (Morocco, Ballyduff, Alloa, Moscow, Cali, Miami) and tried to find beaches or bodies of water associated with them. I also tried playing with the clues/entries that had X's in them. That got me nowhere fast.
