The HEART of the word is its central letter(s) - usually just the ONE central letter of an odd-numbered word or the TWO central letters of an even-numbered, but occasionally ANY number of letters in the centre up to everything except the first and last. HEARTLESS = without the central letter(s), HALF-HEARTED = with half the central letters missing, BROKEN-HEARTED = central letters in a different order, HEART TRANSPLANT = change the central letter(s) for a different one
