The first letters of the original fill words for these clues spell the meta answer WIZARDRY||

Tough puzzle! I saw the word ladder but I didn't have the slightest clue of how to proceed with the meta after that. :o

This is a great META. I've done lots of word games where you try to get from this word to that one changing one letter at a time. But to do that going from lead to gold and then have alternates -- very nice.
