    Ha! If I had plotted this grid manually in Excel or something, I would have left out the numbers and clues for the two-letter "answers" entirely just to hint at them being a continuation of something else.

  split-level and broken heart... insanely clever use of a black square... i was stuck for a while and thought to myself "what is a hea?" maybe hex, like someone getting dumped a hex was put on them?
