    Thank you! Honestly reading it back I can see how the construction of the clue is unclear in that sense, so thank you so much for the feedback! My intention with 1D was for the word "broth" to be taken as a synonym of stew, where "in it" would clue its situation within the word "brother".

      No problem! I think the issue here is that 'stew' seems to be the definition, but it's in the middle of the clue. Strictly speaking for cryptics, the definition either comes at the beginning or the end.

      So something like "Brother holds a stew (5)" would do what you're looking for, within the usual parameters.
