Can you explain 36 and 37 across? I'm baffled.

36A is just a synonym -- hind meaning read (as in hind quarters) and hind being another word for a female deer. for 37A, Dale = Glen, nichols started = n, near = close. Dale Nichols is apparently a somewhat famous painter but I hadn't heard of him before looking for someone named Dale N.
